Star Wars Day
Equilibrium is the normality of the diegesis, presented in the opening of the film. Acting as the status quo.
Star Wars and Narrative Theory: (Tod Roff)
Act 1
- Status Quo = Luke Skywalker lives on Tatooine, on a moisture farm with his aunt and uncle. Luke wants to escape his normal life and explore the stars. The Empire is strong and has captured Princess Leia who passes a message onto two droids who manage to escape.
- Catalyst/Disruption = Luke and his Uncle Owen purchase the two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Luke is attacked and then rescued by Ben Kenobi. R2-D2 reveals Princess Leia's message.
- Luke finds out the truth of his father and Ben Kenobi wants to train Luke in the ways of the force. Luke stumbles on a massacre of Jawas and worries for his family back at the farm.
- Acceptance and Action = Luke returns to find his aunt and uncle dead, disintegrated into skeletons. Luke is ready to move on and complete his mission
- Trials and Tribulations = Luke and Ben Kenobi head to Mos Eisley to find a ship to take them to Alderaan. Meeting Han Solo and Chewbacca.
- Edge of the Abyss = The group travels to Alderaan's location to find debris, and in the distance a small moon. Ben Kenobi warns that the distant moon is truly a battle station, but it's too late.
- The Plunge = The group infiltrate the Death Star. Luke, Han, and Chewy head to get Princess Leia from the prison and are cornered by stormtroopers and they escape through the trash-compactor.
- The Pay Off = The group makes it back to the ship to find Ben Kenobi fighting Darth Vader, his fallen apprentice. Kenobi sacrifices himself to aid their escape.
Act 3
- The way through = the group join with the rebels and plan an attack on the Death Star to destroy it.
- The true test = The Battle of Yavin. Luke is now alone, all his troops have been killed, and gets a message from Ben Kenobi to use the force. Luke fires a torpedo into the Death Star and the station explodes.
- The New Equilibrium = The group make it back and celebrate their victory.
Good analysis Ben.
